Andrej Rubljov 35mm (Celluloid Nights by Cinema Niche)

Schedule
The first three screenings of the fall season focus on transcendental style. Paul Schrader, a legendary figure in New Hollywood (and, incidentally, the screenwriter of Taxi Driver), wrote in his influential book about how the formal language of film can reveal itself as a spiritual experience. The second film in the series is Andrei Tarkovsky's oft-cited masterpiece about the life of the monk and icon painter Andrei Rublev.
Celluloid Nights' mission is to revive the unrepeatable experience of watching our favorite films on 35mm film, while giving a younger generation perhaps their first opportunity to do so. While cinemas now use digital projection, the experience of watching a film on celluloid is quite different. For contemporary directors such as Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson, shooting on film is primarily a creative decision that influences how their work will look on the big screen. Like them, Celluloid Nights celebrates the materiality of film, recognizing the uniqueness and eternal glory of film as a physical medium.
