Dutch Focus | Spirit Quartet: Ziv Taubenfeld - Steve Swell - Wilbert de Joode - Sun Mi Hong (IL/US/NL/KR)

The recently formed Spirit Quartet brings together four musicians who, despite their diverse professional backgrounds, different personalities, and different generations, all share a thirst for adventure and a love of artistic freedom of expression, and are committed to exploring the mysteries of musical sound. In addition to their own compositions, their repertoire includes works by the recently deceased saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc, a contemporary of William Parker and David S. Ware who built on the pioneering work of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and John Coltrane.

Trombonist Steve Swell has played alongside Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, and Peter Brötzmann, and was Moondoc's partner for many years. Bass clarinetist Ziv Taubenfeld is primarily active in the creative music scenes of Amsterdam and Lisbon, while double bassist Wilbert de Joode is a true legend of Dutch jazz. The quartet is completed by Sun-Mi Hong, a South Korean-born musician who has become an indispensable drummer on the European jazz scene in recent years.
