"So what?"

"He was shot when he went in front of the bread wagon on the road to Étrapes, Colonel!"

"So what?"

"He was torn apart by a grenade!"

"So what! God damn it!

"He's dead, Colonel.

"Is that all?

"That's all, Colonel.

The one who used to mean the world dies, and the one who cannot live without him continues to live without him. And a desire awakens in man to see what comes after him—what if everything continues as before? If nothing changes when the one who was always there is suddenly gone? Because the night is unbearable, and waking up is unbearable, but the real hell is between two people who irreparably destroy each other and then try to remember what they did. They close their eyes in the elevator, in front of the mailbox, on the street, in the restaurant, but their brains keep pairing things that happened in different years, in different places, so all that's left for them is heaviness. But how does memory work when something happens that shouldn't have happened? And how can you find out the truth when the living and the dead claim different things—with equal conviction?
