Ripoff Raskolnikov is certainly one of the contemporary artists who have made the Eastern European blues not only a traditional musical genre, but also a vibrant form of artistic expression that can wound or even uplift us all. Ripoff's lyrics are often close to poetry, and his music draws on the spiritual power of great icons such as John Lee Hooker, Tom Waits and Blind Willie McTell. Unforgettable for many of us is the way he sings the song I thought it was raining, but my eyes are watering, in broken Hungarian (a tribute to Muzsikás). But the inimitable artistry and presence of this venerable Hungarian bluesman is not worth commenting on, only experiencing.
