Wagner: Treasure of the Rhine // Müpa (Béla Bartók National Concert Hall)
In 2023, it will be fifteen years since Wagner's complete Ring was first performed at Müpa Budapest, and audiences will be able to welcome a revival of Hartmut Schörghofer's legendary production as a familiar face. The Ring of the Nibelung is one of the greatest works of art in the history of mankind, a monumental achievement comparable to the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes, the Divine Play or Joseph and his Brothers: we owe it to ourselves to encounter it from time to time.

The Treasure of the Rhine is an introduction to the storyline, showing the basic conflict. We experience the peace of the primordial state, and before our eyes the original sin is committed, which sets in motion the chain of events leading to destruction. Again and again, we sense that the myth is not about gods, giants or dwarves, but about us; the playful and terrifying tale is not of a world that never was, but of our own. Before the first evening, it is worth getting to know the concept of the artistic director of the Wagner Days in Budapest, conductor Adam Fischer, who says that the most important objective of the Wagner Days is "to build a performance style that is in keeping with Wagner's original vision. For him, dramatic expression and intense text expression were the most important; he did not expect singing in the traditional sense, but rather Sprechgesang (speech) from the characters. With Sprechgesang and the Gesamtkunstwerk: the artistic unity of text, music and stage action, he created a new genre. We strive to make our performances as faithful as possible to Wagner's vision. We are convinced that this is the only way to present Wagner's oeuvre in an exciting, captivating and accessible way." The cast of The Treasure of the Rhine includes the German bass-baritone Günther Groissböck, who played Wotan in the 2022 Rienzi performance, and the other cast members include long-time favourite Christian Franz as Luge, while Mime is once again played by Jürgen Sacher, following his highly successful debut in 2015.
