Better safe than sorry, so the saying goes. Well, Siegfried, the hero of Germanic mythology and Wagner, is famous for his fearlessness. He is a man of great strength, unbridled gaiety, unbridled ferocity, a son of the forest and a friend of wild animals, and not to be trifled with. There are not many in the world today like him. But almost all of us are Siegfried in one respect: most of us don't know who we are, and only slowly on our journey do we realise what we are.

A rainbow of orchestral sounds, mysterious dialogues, enigmatic questions. Intriguing dwarf and triumphant young hero. Dragon-slaying and prophetic birdsong understood through the tasted blood of the beast. A passage through fire, a companion found and the fear found in love. These, along with a host of other elements, make up the fairytale magic of Siegfried. But it also reveals the conflict between generations: the descendants push aside their predecessors, the old Wanderer receives the harshest criticism from the wimpy young. And there's a warning in the work: at every fork in the road, behind every tree, the inevitable Fate lurks. We must also ask: is Siegfried really the worthy successor of the Welsh? Or is his instinct a decadence, and he himself an unconscious instrument of fate? Wagner is a great creator: his work does not provide clear answers. As in the previous year, the title role is once again played by Stefan Winke, and the mysterious Wanderer, Wotan in disguise, is once again embodied by the Latvian Egils Silins. Jürgen Sacher returns as the great Mimé of 2015, Erika Gál's Erda is back, and the constant is represented by one of the mainstays of the Wagner Days in Budapest: Péter Kálmán's superb Alberich. The production introduces a new Brünnhilde in Magdalena Anna Hofmann, a success on the European opera stage, with the press praising her voice's "dark beauty and shimmering tone".
