Stargate at the Svábhegyi Observatory! Welcome Saturn!

2023-08-26T15:00:00.000Z

Did you hear that? 'Stargate' opens in the Svábhegyi Observatory!!!!

Always wondered about the stars and the mysteries of the Universe? Svábhegy Observatory will open the door to the infinite curiosity with a new series of events full of endless wonders for everyone! At these pre-announced Saturdays, all the observatory's astronomical program sites are free to explore at your own pace. Families with the curious little stargazers are welcome from the afternoon, with a full range of interactive family activities, while everybody else (who can stay up late :)) can join us any time and stay until 11:00 PM.

If you want to reserve your spot, you can buy your tickets in advance (we recommend it!) however these days you can redeem your tickets on the spot and dive right in the joy of observing.

Tonight's star is the planet Saturn in opposition. Saturn is closest to Earth when it is in opposition, so it looks its biggest and brightest. And there's a special surprise in store! At opposition, a rare effect called the Seeliger effect is seen on the planet's rings, making them brighter and shinier than usual. So the planet is beckoning us with its rings on this night!

Schedule

Let's see what we have in store for this afternoon and evening:

17:00-21:00 Daytime astronomy in 3 locations at the same time!

The Stargate opens at 17:00!

From 17:00 to 18:30, we will be unraveling the secrets of our **Sun **on our Observation Terrace. In our special Hydrogen Alpha telescopes, we will discover the shapes of the sun's surface and the fountain, flare or bridge-shaped prominences of the solar atmosphere. As well as the Sun, our celestial companion, the Moon, rises early in the programme, so we can admire the craters of the wavy disk of the Moon near the horizon.

At the telescope workshop until 18:00, we will observe the Sun's surface and atmosphere, with a colourful world of sunspots and flares. And** from 19:30** onwards, you can admire the craters and basins of the Moon.

In the** Budapest Dome,** our telescope giant will take us to the distant Mars, about to play hide-and-seek behind the Sun. Its red disk is particularly tiny because of its great distance. And** from 18:00**, we'll start to explore the red giant star** Arcturus** in daylight.

17:00-20:00 Interactive programmes:

Before dark, we will have a number of scientific, interactive and entertaining programmes closely related to astronomy:

On the Space-Time Trampoline, we will model the motion of planets and stars with the help of speeding marbles.

Meteorite Investigations: we'll be looking into our microscopes to see the rainbow-coloured crystals of meteorites with our own eyes. You can also get your own hands on objects from billions of years of space.

Our Spectrum Zone takes us into a colourful world of light and optical experiments, and shows us exciting things like black flames!

Smell the scents of the planets of the solar system by smelling the 'space perfumes' in the flasks of a planet-sniffing lab! A unique experience, we guarantee it! : )

As evening falls, the starry sky awaits!

20:30-23:00 - evening stargazing

Our star of the evening is the planet** Saturn** in opposition. We will be able to admire the planet's cloud bands as well as its ever-slimming ring. The Cassini slit in the ring cuts the cosmic bakelite into an outer A ring and an inner B ring. The Seeliger effect makes the B ring particularly shiny and bright! Orbiting alongside it is the orange giant moon of Titan, and we can even discover the moons Rhea and Tethys! Saturn is visible from the Rooftop Terrace from 20:30 and from the Budapest Dome from 21:45!

The waxing Moon will also dazzle you with its magnificent details: the dark bay of the Rainbow Cove (Sinis Iridum) is surrounded by the steep walls of the Jura Mountains. In the southern highlands, the giant craters of Clavius and Longomontanus await. The Moon can be admired from the Observation Terrace and the Telescope Workshop.

In the twilight sky, we look at the most beautiful double stars in the summer sky. Our telescopes show the **double binary of Epsilon Lyrae **in 4 components, and the orange and blue Albireo in the shape of a swan's head. Gamma Delfini, shaped like the nose of a tiny dolphin, is a beautiful, aesthetic straw-yellow star pair that wink at us through the telescope.

One of the most beautiful and brightest summer arrow clusters, the **Summer Bee (**IC 4665), lies in the constellation of the Serpent Constellation, waiting with its bluish stars. We'll also see celestial heavyweights such as the M13 globular cluster of half a million stars in the constellation Hercules. And the Ring Nebula (M57) in the constellation of Lant is the ejected gas shell of its dead star, expanding around it like a magnificent cosmic smoke ring.
