We make a million sacrifices in our lives for different things, but perhaps the greatest sacrifice is for our immediate family. Where is the limit to the sacrifices we make for the better life of our children? How long can this state of tension be maintained, and what is the point beyond which one is no longer capable of making any kind of sacrifice?

Örkény's classic shows us the way to these answers. In our dance theatre production, the expressive power of the body is given a special role, often as a source of humour, at other times as a source of misery and anguish. The characters are physical and psychological projections in space of the particular characters we know from the dramatic text. The physical possibilities of role-forming, the energy of mimicry and movement tell this eternal story, with a particular dramaturgical line in the language of folk dance and folk music.
Various folk songs and chants are performed, whose dramaturgical function is to make the story understandable. A 'body of text' has been created for the movement material, which, drawing on the texts of our archaic folk songs, sometimes rolls on, sometimes comments on, or, even self-ironically, caricatures the events. The expressive power of the choreography, the acerbic humour of the story, the humanity and perversity of the characters, the duality of sacred and profane elements are all integral to the performance.
Our aim is to create an experiment in folk dance theatre based on a well-known story, which does not neglect black humour, entertains while disappointing, recharges and, above all, makes the audience think.

National Dance Theatre
On 15 February 2019, Budapest's unique new cultural arena opened its doors: the new National Dance Theatre in Millenáris Park. The building, equipped with the latest theatre technology and featuring unique architectural solutions, offers two theatre halls and a chamber hall for dance lovers, as well as rehearsal rooms for professional dancers. The foyer of the building will also become a community space open to visitors to the park, giving Millenáris the opportunity to become even more part of the capital's bloodstream.
