TanBorEn Trio
What's in and beyond classical music? How did it evolve and what were its ramifications over the centuries? The TanBorEn Trio will seek answers to these questions in what promises to be an exciting outdoor concert. It will also take the audience of the Hungarian House of Music on an imaginary journey around the world, covering everything from African and East Asian traditional music, through various European folk tunes, to jazz indigenous to the United States.

We tend to think of so-called "classical" music as something that has always existed, something that is essentially unchanging, but like all cultural traditions, it comes from somewhere, it is influenced by many different influences, it is in constant dialogue with other art forms. In this concert we will have the opportunity to gain an insight into three musical worlds which, although quite distinct from what we call classical music, have in common that they are related to it in different ways.
The first of these is the world of traditional music outside Europe: percussion instruments themselves, for much of the twentieth century, ultimately seeped into classical music from there. The next stop is much closer to home: percussion transcriptions of the music of peoples who provided the most direct source of inspiration for Bartók and Stravinsky, among others. Thirdly, jazz, a relatively recent development in music history compared to the previous two, is presented, and has been closely linked to classical music since its inception.
