FREUD CAFE: Connecting with yourself and others
A live, in-person event (*can be followed online)
Speaker: Judit Simon, clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, training movement and dance psychotherapist
The focus of the next Freud Café, organised by the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Association, will be on the theme of relating to oneself and others.
Much of our understanding of each other is not verbal, but bodily, movement-based. The most elementary level of experiencing ourselves is the connection to our own bodies. What does this mean? What makes it difficult? What are the cultural and life-historical reasons behind the difficulties?
The relationship with our body is not as simple as we would like to believe, and is easily reduced to a mere physical regulation of our body. To clearly recognise our own needs and not lose sight of them in our connection with others, it is essential to perceive ourselves at a bodily level.
The practitioner will illustrate her message through exercises used in psychodynamic movement and dance therapy (PMT). PMT is a therapeutic method based on contemporary psychoanalytic theories, where the different exercises are very similar to the situations in which the original ˗ relationship patterns formed with the caregiver on a physical and psychological level ˗ are inscribed. These early patterns belong to a domain of memory that cannot be accessed verbally, but during PMT they appear in a very direct here-and-now way, making them easier to study, understand and rework. All these therapeutic processes taken together can ultimately lead to changes in existing patterns of relationships. The presenter will spend the available hour and a half developing these ideas, reflecting with the audience in the last third of the programme.
