11. POLSKA JAZZ FESTIVAL | SUPERMINIMALISM (PL)
The Polish quintet Superminimalism was founded by drummer Stefan Raczkowski. Their sound is primarily defined by the language of jazz, but Raczkowski's large-scale, complex compositions also reveal the influence of contemporary and large orchestral music. The line-up forgoes the use of chordal instruments, allowing the orchestra to focus on melodic lines while combining jazz stylistic features with elements of aleatoric and sonoristic elements and abstract compositional techniques with a keen sense of enthusiasm. Since its formation in 2020, Superminimalism's career has been on a steep upward trajectory: in 2021 they won second prize at the Jazz Juniors competition, and have made their debut at the Opus Polska Jazz Festival and the Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto. Last year, they won the grand prize at the JAZZiNSPIRACJE competition, which led to the release of their debut album Prelude.
