Botanical Illustrations Workshop - The alchemy of the rose
Noémi Vészabó Leonardo and Michelangelo award-winning painter Noémi Vészabó's highly successful workshop series at YBL6 Art Space, the new venue of the Castle Garden Bazaar.
This time, we will study rose illustrations from antiquity to the present day: how did they appear in mosaics, stained glass windows, paintings, or in the botanical drawings of Vera Csapody? We will draw and paint roses in pastels, watercolours and felt-tip pens.

Botanical illustration is the depiction of the shapes, colours, textures and details of plants, which has helped, among other things, to identify plant species for medicinal purposes. Botanical illustrations, once used for science and medicine, now also have an aesthetic function.
Each session begins with a brief introduction to the depiction, symbolism and medical and medicinal role of medicinal plants, flowers and other plants from ancient times to the present day.
We trace legends: was the richly illustrated Voynich manuscript really drawn by nuns or was it an early work by Leonardo? Could it have been a medieval herbal medicine book or an alchemist's manuscript?
We also look into the Hungarian aspects of botanical drawing. The history of our Botanic Garden also unfolds in the spirit of botany. But we'll also take you on an adventure through the botanical gardens of Hungary...
After the introductory lecture, we will draw or paint a picture of a herb or flower. Guidance and the necessary supplies (dipped paper or good quality cardboard, black felt for outlining, pencils, watercolours, brushes) will be provided.
Participants will be able to take home the workshop artwork as a lasting work of art to decorate their homes.
