When Baron van Swieten, known from Hungarian history as the head of the school programmes of Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II, commissions Mozart to transcribe four Handel works, no one could have known that 250 years later, the Messiah would still be a festive treat for the world. Mozart shortens the work and enriches it with new instruments, yet, in the spirit of historical thinking that has gained ground, everyone today plays the Handel original. Except at the Opera, where it is believed that Mozart's reverent touch has enriched the work and it can now be presented to the public as a joint gift from two geniuses.

Hungarian State Opera
The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
