Baroque christmas - Lodestar trio
The Lodestar Trio is a unique initiative of Scandinavian folk music stars Erik Rydvall and Olav Mjelva and British violin virtuoso Max Baillie, bringing the spirit of groove and improvisation to baroque music by combining traditional Nordic stringed instruments - the Norwegian hardanger fidula and the Swedish nyckelharpa - with the classical violin. Their programme will include rearranged and reimagined versions of Bach's cello suites, sonatas and scores for solo violin, and works by other baroque composers, alongside traditional Nordic melodies and original compositions by the ensemble members, and, new to the trio, some classics of Eastern European folkloric composition.

Schedule
Lodestar Trio was formed in 2018 after Max came across a video of Olav and Erik playing together. This was followed by a short email exchange and then a three-day music-making session, after which they decided to continue working together for the long term. They have since recorded and released their debut album Bach to Folk last year on the Naxos label to critical acclaim. They have performed live on BBC broadcasts, been featured on national radio in Germany, Norway, Sweden and Ireland, and performed at festivals across Europe, including in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK.
