GOETHE JAZZ | DANIEL ERDMANN'S ORGANIC SOULFOOD

Daniel Erdmann's orchestras usually bring together playful and highly skilled musicians who create an instantly recognisable sound with their personal, innovative style. This is also the case with Erdmann's latest trio, Organic Soulfood, in which his longtime collaborator Jim Hart replaces him on drums with vibraphone, while the saxophonist and Antonin Rayon (Hammond organ) are new collaborations. Daniel Erdmann conceived the idea for Organic Soulfood in January 2021 and the band made its debut at a festival in Frankfurt in November. Rayon's sophisticated harmonies and bass melodies, at times abstract, at times almost electronic, blend perfectly with Erdmann's warm, sometimes deliberately rough saxophone sound. Driven by Hart's volatile drum grooves, Erdmann repeatedly explores a wide range of emotions, approaching his compositions primarily from the improvisational side, while maintaining their intricate form.

The trio's name is a faithful reflection of Erdmann's sense of humour and his current attitude. "The name is a play on words, of course, but it also stems from the need to play music in which soul, instinct and mind harmonise. I need music that feeds my soul, and I want the name of the band to reflect that."

In recent years, Daniel Erdmann has become known mainly for two trios. The first is Velvet Revolution (Theo Ceccaldi, violin and Jim Hart, vibraphone), which has now released three albums on BMC Records, and the second is Das Kapital (Hasse Poulsen, guitar and Edward Perraud, drums). Both pan-European, French-based groups are made up of soloists of great stature, who have been enthusiastically welcomed by both the press and the public. They have been awarded the German Record Critics' Prize and the ECHO Prize, among others. Erdmann has also appeared alongside the inimitable Aki Takase on several occasions, including on the album Isn't It Romantic?, one of the brightest gems in the BMC Records catalogue. Organic Soulfood will also be recording at BMC on the day of the concert, with their debut album due for release in 2024.
