Cut off from the world, the most dangerous mentally ill criminals in the United States are being held in a mental institution on a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. When a woman convicted of murder inexplicably escapes from the high-security facility in the fifties, the principal, Dr. Cawley, is forced to seek outside help. Two police magistrates, Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, travel to the island to find out what happened and find the fugitive. Daniels has to deal not only with the psychiatrist who is holding back his work, but also with his own demons...
