A Weöres Sándor verses elbeszélése alapján készült film fantasztikus vízió, látványban elmesélt időutazás, a posztmodern korszak nyitó filmenciklopédiája. Bódy Gábor összekapcsolta a 18. században élt cigány grófnő, Lónyay Erzsébet, a tragikus sorsú drámaíró, Ungvárnémeti Tóth László szerelmét, és a fantaszta Zedlitz báró történetét. E szerelmi háromszög mögé másfél évszázad szellemtörténeti ívét rajzolja fel a felvilágosodástól az 1920-as évekig.
