Salvatore, who lost his father in the war, is passionate about films. Whenever he can, he spends all his time at the cinema. The tiny Cinema Paradiso is his home; the films are his parents. The screening room and the projection room are the most important settings of his adolescence, where he has life-changing experiences. The boy, who is always bustling about there, forms a special friendship with the cheerful, middle-aged projectionist, Alfredo, who offers him advice on love and the big questions of life. Salvatore works as an apprentice at Cinema Paradiso until that sad day when the cinema is destroyed by fire.
