A Terroir. The Growing-Place, the Spirit of Place.

Tokaj or Somló are considered by many to be some of the best terroirs in the world, just as the wine regions of Eger, Villányi or Badacsony have enormous potential. But there is a concept that many are unfamiliar with: terroir. Sunshine, precipitation, soil, rock, slope, steepness of the terrain are all important factors in determining quality, as is the winemaker himself, the person responsible for growing and making the grapes. From another point of view, however, Terroir is the "Productive Place", the Spirit of the Place, the dwelling place of the local gods, the nurturer of passions, the stage for dramas involving man and his approach to the world and to winemaking.
