VREMEA VÁLKÀNIA

2024-08-21T18:00:00.000Z

The enchanting sound of VreMea Válkània is created by the dual female presence, complemented by the unique interplay of accordion and cimbalom. It searches for the common musicality of the Balkans through smoky, decadent and melancholic melodies, tempering the overheatedness of the "East" with a gritty "Western" atmosphere.

Schedule

What is a lyrical Bosnian sevdalinka with virtuoso cimbalom accompaniment like? How does a Serbian kolo with Hungarian accordion sound with Romanian lyrics? How can a lăutar instrumental interlude be inserted into a Greek "tango"? How do famous hits travel between the Balkan countries? How does a Greek rebetiko song from the last century become the Hollywood soundtrack to a first date or a sleepless night? How do musicians from the Balkan regions inspire each other? What Western musical influences can be found in traditional genres? What attracts four Central and Eastern European musicians to the Balkans and the Mediterranean? These are the questions that the VreMea Válkània project seeks to answer by combining two-voice singing and two instrumental combinations, the cimbalom and the accordion, which make up a full orchestra in themselves.

The members of the ensemble, singers Veronika Varga and Ilka Kisgyörgy, accordionist Benedek Réti and cimbalom player Ion Curteanu, come from a variety of musical backgrounds, from folk music to jazz and classical music. This gives their collaboration not only diversity but also inexhaustible inspiration.
