GUIDED TOUR ⏐ Maria Pecsics: Imagined Unverse

2024-12-12T17:00:00.000Z

Maria Pecsics will give a guided tour of her solo exhibition.

In this very personal exhibition, dust particles swirling in the void take shapes as stars and cosmic landscapes. These are imaginary landscapes that cannot exist without the presence of a late individual.

Dust is the smallest unit of the visible matter. Everything is made of dust and decays back into it. Dust is the parable of the world, from a philosophical point of view dust is the ultimate thing, because in a very material sense it is the residue that bears witness to existence, the evidence of existence, but even more so its purpose to be part of the universe.

The photographs of Imagined Universe were taken of the dust in my friend, Eszter’s house, who passed away this year. In the dust, swirling in the backlight, a parallel universe is etched out, exactly like a picture of a cosmic landscape, a universe that does not preserve her memory, but her person.

The cosmic landscapes are accompanied by fictitious constellations drawn on the photographs, made up of motifs specific to Eszter's life and personality, a playful attempt to construct an astrological formula imagined in retrospect.

The third part of the exhibition is based on the idea that while a speck of dust, barely visible to the eye, from a certain point of view can be the whole universe, the planets, from the perspective of the universe can appear to be just a speck of dust. It is all a matter of perspective. The microscopic images of dust function as planets in the installation of the exhibition, in which the photographs serve as windows to the landscapes of my imagined universe.
