MTPA SmartUP #01 // Roundtable discussions at SopronFest
The MTPA team has been maturing for some time now the idea of making podcasts of the topics of our monthly roundtables, the MeetUPs, capturing the relevant information and important ideas from the MeetUPs and making them available to a wider audience.In April 2023, we will launch our podcast series SmartUP at SopronFest.
For three days, we will be talking about three topical issues with the most exciting players of the Hungarian festival scene in different venues of Sopron. The panel discussions will be open to the public, but registration is required, and the podcasts will be available on our social media platforms.

FESTIVALS IN A DIFFERENT WAY

When we hear the word "festival", most of us nowadays associate it with a very clearly defined event format: an outdoor venue where all the wonders last for a few days. However, trends are constantly changing, and a number of national organisers have moved out of the box.
In the first part of MTPA's offsite MeetUP, we talk to four festival leaders about the challenges of moving away from traditional festival formats. The discussion will be made available later as a podcast and SmartUP.

Why is it important for a festival to have a mission statement?
Which causes can and should be supported? What is counterproductive?
Taking responsibility, or organising around declared values, will usually be important for smaller festivals where the basis for cohesion is not purely commercial. This value horizon may come from the age or interests of the visitors, but it may also be that the organisers wish to highlight a theme they consider important. Among other things, we talk about this with representatives of the Bánkitó Festival, Made in Debrecen and EFOTT at MTPA's outsourced MeetUP and in its new podcast series, SmartUP.

In the small but crowded festival market in Hungary, organising an event for fans of a specific genre of music is a daring thing to do - and even harder to maintain that certain "niche status". Whether it's drum & bass, domestic and international underground, or a combination of unique venues and lineups, Balaton Sound, Fekete Zaj Festival, Fishing on Orfű and La Boum have already proven the validity of these festivals. In this special edition of SopronFest MeetUP-SmartUP, we ask the organisers of the genre festivals about their experiences, motivation and plans.
