Almeida Faria, one of the most fascinating figures of postmodern Portuguese literature, is coming to the PesText Festival!

Born in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, Almeida Faria studied philosophy at the Faculty of Law and Arts of the University of Lisbon and later taught aesthetics at the New University of Lisbon.

He wrote his first novel in 1962, at the age of just 19 — a work that, as critic Bálint Urbán put it, “stirred up the still waters of Portuguese literature.” His experimental novel White Noise broke with traditional narrative techniques, inspired by the Nouveau Roman movement associated with Alain Robbe-Grillet.

Schedule

In his latest work, The Whispering of the World, Almeida Faria sets out in search of Portuguese India. By exploring the many layers of colonial history, he reveals that the literature of colonization and Orientalism is not only a French or British phenomenon but also deeply embedded in Portuguese culture.

Those who have visited Goa may recognize the peculiar fusion of local and colonial cultures — a tapestry of scents, flavors, languages, and ideas. In Faria’s writing, the voice of the explorers intertwines with the magic of India, bringing to life a vivid, sensory postcolonial atmosphere.
