Binder trio
Pianist and composer Károly Binder, professor at the Liszt Ferenc University of Music, is a significant figure in Hungarian jazz life. With his formation called Trio, Binder launched his record series in 2018, which transferred Béla Bartók's cycle: For Children to his own world of music –, which consists of a synthesis of different music cultures, compositional techniques and improvisational systems. In 2023, the last piece of the five CD series, the entire work, was published in 2024. With his trio of large-format musicians, he plays his cycle of Bartók's works in the House of Music.

„The jazz transcript of the Binder Trio Bartók's Children is a peculiar interpretation of the composer's small pieces. The audience can reinterpret folk music culture from a contemporary perspective. ” Or, as Károly Binder approaches Bartók's works: „When I first played Béla Bartók's volumes: For Children in the beginning, there was no way I could make friends with the little pieces, somehow I always had a feeling of lack after playing these works. Perhaps there was a lack of variations known from classical music styles or further elaborations of themes. When I finished the pieces, many times I felt like they should start now. Later, when I had already taught them, we often improvised on an ostinate, a series of harmonies. During the reworkings, I tried to display different moods and characters. ”
