We are a small country, with lots of good people in a small place, they say. This _good_ is not a value judgment, nor is it what we are talking about here. We all go to the cinema, the theatre, concerts, exhibitions, hum the same songs for days on end because the melody is insatiable, share inspiring thoughts of inspiring people, get extra tickets for unattainable performances, we put our favourite band's favourite album cover as our wallpaper, we recite those particular lines of poetry ad nauseam, we sweat and sweat in tents dumped from who knows where, just to be at the festival where that band is playing. And where that writer is signing books. And that actor is playing the lead.

Artists, however clichéd the word, and however clichéd the phrase may become, have an impact on us. But do we know who they really are? Who destroyed their sandcastle on holiday in Tiszaug in '94? For how many weeks did they hide that pumpkin in their kindergarten cupboard that they were given for lunch but hated? What did they replace their sticker album with? For whom did they ditch their Solfege lessons? What did they read? What did they listen to? What did they think? How did they get here and where did they go from here?
