A Place To Bury Strangers (US)
Brooklyn-based A Place To Bury Strangers fits perfectly into Chelsea Wolfe’s dark, brooding world. With roots in post-punk, the trio—led by guitar-wielding noise genius Oliver Ackermann—has forged a truly unique and brilliant amalgam of noise rock, industrial, and psychedelic rock.
It speaks volumes about APTBS to see which bands they’ve opened for over the past decade or so: from the Brian Jonestown Massacre to the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, all the way to Nine Inch Nails and MGMT. Of course, sound and noise-obsessed Ackermann played a huge role in this; he experiments with unique sounds not only as a musician but also as an electronics engineer. He designed and soldered his massive pedalboard himself and has built custom pedals for Lou Reed, My Bloody Valentine, the Flaming Lips, and Trent Reznor.
From this, it’s easy to guess that the guitar plays a prominent role in APTBS’s music. More precisely, it’s exactly what we couldn’t even imagine being possible with a guitar. The most mind-blowing effects, distortions, riffs, and noises swirl around, while the drums thunder ominously and the echoing vocals float ethereally above them.
Band members
Oliver Ackermann: guitar, vocals
Dion Lunadon: bass guitar
Robi Gonzalez: drums
Location
A38 Ship
Converted from a coal-mining ship, the A38 is easily Budapest's most unique concert venue. The belly of the ship has been home to a wide range of live and electronic music for almost 20 years, and when it's full you can feel the rhythmic movement of the partygoers making waves in the Danube. Foreign acts often refer to it afterwards as their favourite club.
