Orchestra Nazionale della Luna

2023-08-18T18:00:00.000Z

Founded by Finnish Kari Ikonen on Moog and piano and Belgian woodwind player Manuel Hermia, Orchestra Nazionale della Luna is a true modern jazz quartet rooted in the jazz tradition, while remaining open to both the musical phenomena and social aspects of our time. Both the Moog and the Indian flute, the bansuri, often used by Hermia, offer musicians a wide range of possibilities to expand the classical quartet sound by incorporating Indian and Arabic music on the one hand, and electronic effects on the other.

Schedule

The ever-changing, intense and highly complex interplay between French bassist Sébastien Boisseau and Belgian drummer Teun Verbruggen provides the basis for the piano and saxophone duo, often calling for a surprising rhythmic and melodic duel. Modernist-driven swing, spiritual depths that rise and fall, and an ever-present, almost Fellini-esque sense of humour are the main elements that have crystallised into the unique musical meteorite that is Orchestra Nazionale della Luna. The orchestra's second album, There's Still Life On Earth, a musical statement on the ecological crisis, was released in 2020 on BMC Records. Their new material, which will also be recorded at BMC before the concert, balances composition and improvisation, acoustic and electronic soundscapes, order and chaos, and asks questions about the social problems caused by technology and AI in particular.
