FUR

Clarinetist-composer Hélène Duret founded the quintet Synestet in 2017, and two years later the trio FUR, formed by Synestet members. Their name comes from an old French term that refers to proportion and measure, and the trio's compositions and playing are just that: they perform their improvisational music with flair and exquisite taste, but never at the expense of expression and audacity. The three French musicians are driven by spontaneity and experimentation with timbre and texture, so their music is almost minimalist, yet it is full of breathless action.

Their main sources include the music of Jim Black's AlasNoAxis, Big Thief, Daniel Lanois and Jimmy Giuffre. They know exactly what they want to say to their audiences, but not how - their concerts take the listener on an unrepeatable voyage of self-expression.

Their first album, the meditative Boîte noire, was released in 2021 on the Belgian ~suite label, and since then they have released six digital singles under the Tricollectif label, all in collaboration with writer Robin Mercier and three photographers, demonstrating the trio's openness to other artistic disciplines. Their next album will be recorded for BMC Records and is expected to be released in 2024. Bandleader Hélène Duret has already appeared on the Opus stage as part of the seventh edition of the Jazz Migration programme as part of the Suzanne trio, and has played with musicians closely associated with the label, such as Vincent Courtois, Théo Ceccaldi and Daniel Erdmann.
