An orchestra that can only be described in superlatives: four legends of European and American jazz take creative jazz to the highest level in the new quartet of Alex von Schlippenbach and Barry Altschul. Their concert programme in Budapest consists of free improvisations, original compositions and arrangements specially created for this formation.

The idea for the quartet was born after the trio of Schlippenbach, Altschul and Joe Fonda performed with great success at the 2022 free jazz festival in Saarbrücken. Alex von Schlippenbach is one of the founders of the European free jazz scene. He initiated and led the formation of the Globe Unity Orchestra and the Schlippenbach Trio, with members such as Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, Jaki Liebezeit, Mani Neumeier, Toshinori Kondo and Paul Lovens. It is also thanks to his studies with avant-garde composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann that Schlippenbach's compositions often reference both jazz tradition and dodecaphonic music.

New York drummer Barry Altschul played in the Paul Bley Trio for many years. He was the founder of the band Circle, along with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton, and has toured and recorded with countless projects around the world.

Rudi Mahall is a fearless pioneer of the bass clarinet. He made his name, among other things, by recording all of Thelonious Monk's songs under the title Monk's Casino. His playing and compositions balance irresistible wit and obsessive seriousness.

Joe Fonda is a true master of the double bass, performing not only with Anthony Braxton, Barry Altschul and Archie Shepp or with his own ensembles, but also with dance and other arts.
