Black String
The name "Black String" is derived from another name for the traditional Korean zither, the geomungo, hyeongeum (pronounced hjangüm), which is written in Chinese characters as hyeon (玄) meaning "black" and geum (琴) meaning "zither". The term "Black String", however, not only refers to the geomungo, but also has a philosophical meaning: by combining the black colour, which in the East represents the universe, with the image of a string, which symbolises the melody line of Korean music, it refers to a musical instrument that sounds the sounds of the universe.

Black String draws on traditional Korean instruments and music, while freely blurring genre boundaries with a comprehensive sensibility, and takes full advantage of the improvisational skills of the performers in their concerts. The ensemble is composed of guitarist Oh Jeong-su, daegeum (pronounced tegüm) artist Lee Aram and percussionist Hwang Min-wang, led by acclaimed geomungo artist Heo Yoon-jeong.
The artists will present a modern and unique repertoire with the distinctive aesthetic of the Black String to the audience, promoting the excellence of traditional Korean music to a wide audience. The ensemble was selected as an official showcase at the 2016 World Music Expo (WOMEX) and in 2018 was the first Korean winner in the Asia & Oceania category of the renowned British music magazine Songlines. He is currently touring the world as an invited performer at several international festivals.
Black String is the first Asian group to release their first album "Mask Dance" (2016), their second album "Karma" (2019) and their live album "Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic" (2020) on Europe's largest jazz label ACT Music.
