NEXTFESZT concerts: the Colibris / Dope Calypso / 666Ghost

The Colibris was started in 2018 in Budapest by singer and rhythm guitarist Máté Sz. Németh, with three other musicians, namely Benedek Bánáti on piano, Balázz Koncz on lead guitar and Kristóf Németh behind the drums. The members create in several genres separately, but for this project there is a consensus among us about the stylistic features. The band found their meeting point by drawing influences from genres ranging from rock & roll, country and surf to indie and dream pop. They started working together in their homes, so they recorded most of the instruments and tracks they played themselves as a home-studio. The result was their debut single, P.S., released in 2021. Musically, they aim to combine vintage sounds and instrumentation with modern pop arrangements and a melancholic flavour. Striving to evoke nostalgic feelings in their listeners, they are closely linked to defining visual experiences inspired by sunset drives, romance and similar aesthetic traits in the songwriting process. The orchestra's first performance was at the Aquarium Great Hall in front of Fran Palermo on 05.11.2022.

Dive with us into the fascinating, luxurious and absurd world of Dope Calypso, where they treat their guests to honest rock music morning, noon and night. Their sound is like a garage punk band unexpectedly infatuated with the lemonade pop music of the late 60's. Something of a strange duality was already evident on their 2014 debut album Farewell To The Fairy, Goodbye To The Ghost, and although it made it onto all the relevant Hungarian end-of-year charts, it was on the follow-up, released eight months later, that the band really hit the headlines. Banzai! Banzai! (2015), the love affair matured.

On this album, the two-minute tracks, which also functioned as pop music, told absurd stories interspersed with comic, sacred and other obscure pop-cultural references. With 2016's Mau Mau and 2017's Chaka, Chaka, the band continued on the path they had begun, showing - through an album released every year - how surprisingly entertaining it is to actually be unable to take yourself seriously. But the sequel had to wait until 2021, when the adventurous Tears to Freshwater was released. But the sixth album is due the following year!

In terms of genre, this frivolity, over the last 8 years of the band's existence, has opened up from a more raw Pixies grunge to a conceptual synth-pop, but more like Pond, only to take on an immature knight-metal character by 2022. In January 2018, their persistent frivolity got them to Eurosonic Noorderslag, which will see them showcase this beautifully composed and packaged brain-bender at Primavera Sound this summer. They then toured Portugal for a repeat in 2023.
