True, already in 1984 he successfully shed his now legendary rap songs, like U.T.F.O., who started off strong with "Roxanne, Roxanne", the trio WHISTLE, who performed the hit single "Just Buggin'", KID-N-PLAY, who made it big with the movie "Houseparty", or the Brooklyn heavyweights CHUBB ROCK, and last but not least the Latin rap star THE REAL ROXANNE! The parent company, which has achieved huge success with their releases, even dabbled in the more mainstream electronic line at the end of the decade with a few artists in the house/hip-house music line.
However, in a clever business move, in 1992 they came up with a new label name for the stronger, hardcore boom-bap sound of the underground Hiphop music that was bursting in the early nineties -> SELECT STREET has firmly etched its groove in the minds of the determined Hiphopheads!
The veteran CHUBB ROCK and his circle of friends like The A.T.EE.M. or even RED HOT LOVER TONE were naturally a priority for the label. Among the old names, even KID-N-PLAY managed to hold his own against the new direction of Hiphop, but only for a 2 maxi albums, unfortunately... BUT there were some new bangers that shook the whole world, mostly due to the Yo! MTV Raps and other music TV and radio channels playing Hiphop music!
At the start of their huge career, this is where the legendary M.O.P. from Brownsville landed their first few records. More bass-driven house-smashing street rap was brought by Flatbush/Brooklyn duo BLACK MADDNESS or Atlanta gangster rap act C.O.D. and to make the palette even more colourful in terms of territory, AMG from Compton brought two albums of uptempo party and gangster sounds alternating between them.
