Divanhana was formed in Sarajevo in 2009 on the initiative of students from the Academy of Music. The ensemble performs traditional Balkan music in fresh, unique arrangements, where folk traditions meet influences from jazz, pop, and classical music. They place special emphasis on preserving and renewing sevdah, the emotionally rich urban folk music tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Over the years, Divanhana has become one of the defining acts of Balkan world music. They have toured extensively and performed at prestigious festivals across Europe, Australia, and North America, while also enriching their repertoire with original compositions. Their music respectfully engages with tradition while reimagining it through contemporary sounds, making it alive and relevant for today’s audiences.
Their international recognition is highlighted by the fact that in 2023, Songlines Magazine named them the best world music ensemble in the world—one of the most significant international achievements in the history of Bosnian traditional music.
