đŸŸLang (Eddie Peng), a former actor recently released from prison, returns to his hometown in northwestern China, but the area is being evacuated to make way for a massive industrial complex and factories. Most of the residents have already moved out, and stray dogs have overrun the city; Lang joins the dog catchers to help round up the feral dogs. This is how he comes into contact with a black mixed-breed dog, for which a bounty has even been placed. The two lonely, outcast souls—the black dog and Lang—slowly find each other, and a bond of friendship forms between them in the embrace of the desolate Gobi Desert.

đŸŸThe new film by Chinese director Hu Guan (The Cow) won the Grand Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival; since then, it has been recognized in Warsaw, Valladolid, and Jerusalem, among other places, and was most recently nominated for a Gotham Award in the Best Director category. *Black Dog* is not only a heartwarming and surprisingly humorous film about dogs, but also a multi-layered sociological study of the consequences of the brutal wave of industrialization in the 2000s and the heightened anticipation surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The film stars Eddie Peng as a tough prison inmate, alongside Xin, the black mixed-breed dog, who delivers a spectacular performance as the title character: when necessary, he pretends to be sick; at other times, he jumps through a window and steps down onto two legs from the sidecar of a speeding motorcycle.

Location

Bem Cinema

In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
