What does it mean to remain human in an age when technology is reshaping our perception, our thinking, and our relationship with the world ever more profoundly? This question lies at the heart of György Kepes. Interthinking Art – Science, a Canadian–Hungarian feature documentary by Márton Orosz, which offers the first comprehensive portrait of György Kepes (1906–2001), one of the most original Hungarian-born thinkers of the 20th century, whose work has long been unjustly overlooked. Kepes’ oeuvre wove together painting, photography, design, writing, education, and scientific thought into a single, coherent body of work — he was not merely a witness to the historic moment when art, science, and technology first entered into dialogue, but one of its foremost pioneers and shapers.

Through Kepes’ life story, the film traces the birth of 20th-century media art: from the experimental workshop of the New Bauhaus in Chicago to the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), which he founded at MIT — a decades-long intellectual journey in which artists, engineers, physicists, biologists, and architects worked together to turn new technologies into tools for social responsibility and environmental awareness. Archival footage, previously unknown documents, and interviews with leading artists, scientists, architects, and Kepes’ former students bring to life not only an extraordinary body of work, but also the creative milieu from which light art, kinetic and computer art, cybernetic environments, interactive and immersive installations, and many defining strands of contemporary media art would later emerge.

All of this is framed by a roundtable discussion following the screening, which continues the questions raised by the film. The documentary and the discussion will take place on Saturday, 7 November 2026, at 5 p.m. at the Hegyvidék Gallery. The event closes the Light Symposium series (4–7 November 2026) and a special anniversary year, as 2026 marks both the 120th anniversary of György Kepes’s birth and the 30th anniversary of the International Kepes Society.
