As You Make Your Bed…?

Schedule
Imagine a person who, exhausted, keeps repeating to themselves that there will be time to rest only in the grave, and does everything they can, day after day, to stay productive enough. And yet, they cannot sleep, but cannot get out of bed either. Their planner is filled with things to do, but somehow the time set aside for rest is always missing. They cannot wait to get home. Hurrying beneath the streetlights, they often find themselves wishing they could function as predictably as those lights, wishing they could simply switch themselves on and off. There have been others in their family who struggled with sleep, so they do not blame themselves; they have simply inherited the same pattern. Perhaps, when they have finally had enough, they will gather all their money and courage and escape for a wellness weekend, which they will have to enjoy, since everywhere they turn, they hear that this is where people truly know how to relax. This person could be anyone. It could even be us.
In a performance-driven society, rest is often pushed into the background or reduced to a necessary human factor in the pursuit of efficiency. The quality of sleep and recuperation is often treated as an unpredictable, secondary concern, since the results of our waking hours are easier to measure and articulate, even though neither can exist without the other. Through the works of eight artists, the exhibition As You Make Your Bed…? reflects on the impossibility of rest, the burden placed on individuals to take responsibility for their own recuperation, and how easily rest itself can become yet another task to be accomplished when approached through the logic of a performance-driven society.
The Hungarian saying “Ki mint veti ágyát, úgy alussza álmát” (“As you make your bed, so you must lie in it”) suggests that we are responsible for the circumstances we find ourselves in.
