Geordie Greep
A tightrope walk between the ridiculous and the brilliant – Geordie Greep at Turbina.
After black midi broke up, Geordie Greep launched a solo project, resulting in this brilliant debut album. The New Sound is incredibly entertaining, like a bizarre musical that’s at times uplifting and at times slips into a fever dream. Greep is a master of setting the mood, and on July 7, we can join him at the Turbina Cultural Center.

“Music can be so much more than just learning to play the same way everyone else does. It can be anything you want. When recording *The New Sound*, it was the first time I didn’t have to please anyone. In a band (black midi), we often have this feeling that ‘we can do anything,’ but at the same time, that attitude is somewhat limiting, and sometimes it’s good to do something different, to let things go.”
Geordie’s first solo album offers a high-quality, all-encompassing alternative pop experience the likes of which we haven’t heard in a very long time: it balances the ridiculous and the brilliant with confident elegance.
The story behind the album’s creation is fascinating in itself. More than thirty session musicians took part in its production, across two continents. Greep recounts: “We recorded half the songs in Brazil with local musicians we called together at the last minute. They hadn’t heard anything from me before; my demos simply piqued their interest. The recordings were completed in one, at most two days.”
