Since 2017, Los Orangutanes have been making Hungarian audiences dance to cumbia. Although cumbia is one of South America’s most popular genres, it has so far received relatively little attention in Hungary. Los Orangutanes, formed by seasoned and experienced musicians, aim to change this.
The band brings together members of Irie Maffia, Zuboly, Paso, Besh o droM, and Anselmo Crew, and quickly became a favourite among audiences eager to dance. They have performed to sold-out crowds at venues such as Müpa, Akvárium Nagyhall, and Kobuci Kert, as well as at numerous festivals across the country.
In 2021, alongside their live performances, they began releasing studio records as well. Lo Mejor De La Cumbia is a tribute to the genre’s greatest pioneers: a medley of 12 classic cumbia songs that offers a journey through the wide spectrum of cumbia music. Alongside Latin percussion and rich brass arrangements, the accordion—one of the genre’s signature instruments—plays a central role. The tracks are made unique by the performances of Iván Tabeira and Szabolcs Árkosi.
Lo Mejor De La Cumbia is also an audiovisual album, with animated short films created for nearly every track, offering a glimpse into both the band’s and cumbia’s slightly dreamlike, psychedelic world.
Anyone who has attended a Los Orangutanes concert knows it is impossible to sit still—the music makes your feet start moving on their own.
