There are films that don’t just capture an era—they shape it. La Haine (Hate) is one of them. Mathieu Kassovitz’s iconic film burst into Hungarian cinemas in 1996 and has influenced generations ever since. Raw, tense, and timeless—its imprint can still be felt today, from hip-hop culture to street aesthetics.

This June, thanks to Budapest Film, it returns to the big screen in a restored 4K version. Join us in celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release!

After the screening, we’ll be joined by musicians and personalities inspired by the film. Live performances include Slow Village, and in a rare alignment of stars, Flitter & Sár DJ set (Závada Péter & Rév Marcell). Also joining us are Yemen 77, the DJ alias of one of the standout figures of the Wavy collective, and of course his close friend Lemory Moss.

La Haine

A raw, beautiful, and devastating experience—one of the defining works of 1990s French cinema, still as powerful today in its portrayal of exclusion, identity, and rage. Thirty years after its premiere, La Haine returns to Hungarian cinema screens in a restored 4K version.

With La Haine, Mathieu Kassovitz stormed into cinemas with explosive force: a gripping and visually striking snapshot of the social tensions of modern France. In the impoverished suburbs of Paris, among the concrete jungle of housing estates, three friends drift aimlessly from one day to the next. Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Koundé), and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui) come from different backgrounds, yet share the same anger and sense of hopelessness. As the day unfolds, the tension simmering within them brings them ever closer to a fateful moment.
