Minimus Audio Label Night

The years leading up to the millennium were among the most thrilling periods in the UK’s electronic music scene.

Following the rave wave of the early '90s, a growing number of forward-thinking producers and creative collectives began pushing boundaries, crafting sounds that had never been heard before.

These new sonic landscapes redrew the UK’s musical map, eventually conquering clubs worldwide. Drum and bass was one of these groundbreaking genres, defying previous stylistic constraints and successfully bringing together urban youth who had previously been drawn to hip-hop, other electronic scenes, or even heavier metal sounds. While accessible tracks were being made for the average listener, the real breakthrough in the underground came with the rise of tech step and neurofunk. These subgenres, characterized by their extreme breaks and dark basslines, electrified the years leading up to the millennium and spawned countless offshoots, securing drum and bass’s enduring popularity. Today, drum and bass is a staple of mainstream pop culture, with its leading figures regularly headlining festivals and its influence permeating advertising, video games, and the film industry.

But the most interesting things still happen deep underground.

Minimus Audio is an experiment in fusing the vibes of the genre’s early days with the sounds of the modern era, aiming to channel the urban melancholy and synthetic energy of those formative years into messages that resonate with all generations today. We believe that our collaborators—artists and performers who have proven themselves time and again in their respective fields—will help us explore what the turbulent, crisis-filled world of the 2020s means both musically and visually.

A few words about the night’s performers:

>> Rudolf Szilágyi >>

A painter and performer, Szilágyi has been an indispensable figure in Hungary’s performance art scene for over a decade. He has held numerous solo exhibitions and musical projects both at home and abroad, earning multiple accolades for his work. Tonight, we’ll experience his latest sonic experiment, a journey from dark ambient through tribal rhythms to jungle. His live performance, woven with improvisational elements and created on digital instruments, is difficult to categorize, blending meditative and provocative reactions that reach deep into the subconscious, all enhanced by a crucial visual component.

>> Vida L >>

A DJ who is a defining figure in Hungary’s electronic music subculture, Vida L is a veteran of Tilos Radio and has been the host of numerous club nights since the turn of the millennium, including All Night Breaks and Jazz and Bass. Equally at home in breakbeat and drum and bass, Vida L has prepared a special selection just for this night. His versatility and musical intelligence ensure an exciting set where he’ll showcase what he believes is worth paying attention to in underground drum and bass in 2024, guiding us through a deep, emotionally charged sonic landscape.

>> Longman >>

Starting his career over two decades ago as one-half of the legendary Airbag duo, DJ Longman is one of the most respected and revered DJs in the country, with several generations growing up on his sets and considering him a role model. A pioneer of deep drum and bass in Hungary, Longman became a key figure in the scene at a young age. With his own show on Tilos Radio, collaborations with the internationally acclaimed Hungarian drum and bass supergroup Tactile (alongside SKC, Chris.SU, and Safair), and countless performances both locally and abroad, Longman is sure to deliver a set that exemplifies his signature taste and technical prowess.

>> Orlan >>

Co-founder of Minimus Audio, DJ, and producer. Orlan has been a fixture in Hungary’s drum and bass scene since the '90s. He launched the first drum and bass radio show outside Budapest in his hometown of Eger, organized parties for years, and was a regular on Tilos Radio’s Airbag show alongside Longman and Focus until recently. After spending a decade in the UK, where he fell in love with deeper sounds and forged connections with the deep, dark drum and bass subculture, Orlan is set to deliver a selection that will undoubtedly include tracks yet to be heard elsewhere.

>> Teknikolor >>

Throughout the night, we’ll also be treated to a visual display featuring works by Teknikolor, co-founder of Official Classic and the artist behind Minimus Audio’s artwork. Teknikolor’s portfolio includes collaborations with legendary labels such as Detroit Underground.
