>> dialectics << noun
1 (philosophy) The scientific method which examines the phenomena of nature and society in their interrelationship, regards them as being in perpetual motion and change, and explains development from the interplay of forces inherent in this process. In Hegel's conception dialectics is an interpretive method in which the contradiction between a proposition (thesis) and its antithesis is resolved at a higher level of truth (synthesis).
Bentham's Panopticon, as a model of a building, is the embodiment of the multi-level disciplinary system of modern society, which aims to maintain (the imaginary) order and control, and the means of which is constant observation made visible.. This architectural order is already completely internalized under Foucault, the oppressive-overwhelming effect of the innate logic of power (the Whole), with each individual observing himself, thus creating the most tightly controlled system of control over society ever*.
Perhaps only art can maintain its position of being able to critically confront the existing social systems and transcend the oppressive structures of reality. It creates autonomous spaces in which the status quo is challenged** and through which this aesthetics and perception shapes our thinking.
In the Watertower, synthetics make visible the nature of observation and performativity through the mimicry of organic life forms. But can we imagine an alternative life where the observational institutions of human civilisation are not instruments of power?
Let us hope that the Watertower now offers us a new perspective, or at least a better view, which may help us, step by step***, to reinterpret our positions.
