Jazz greats - Sonny Rollins

Gray hair, dark glasses, butter-colored, baggy tuxedo, bent waist, limping gait. This was how the 81-year-old legend took to the stage at his first and last concert in Hungary, at the Müpa Budapest in 2011. He took the mouthpiece of his instrument into his mouth and filled the packed hall with the familiar, powerful, inimitable sound of the saxophone. After the fast-paced, Latin opening number came a succession of evergreens and danceable calypsos, in the good Rollins tradition, merely a starting point for improvisation and the free flight of imagination.

This is the essence of Sonny Rollins' (1930-) playing: the development and variation of melodies and melodic fragments, the thematic construction of fragments, which always returns to the basics as a reference, in order to take the listener to new heights through improvisation. At the peak of his career, his concerts consisted of nothing but an inexorable stream of improvisations.
Gábor Turi's Jazz Free University is a series of greats that will introduce you to the unsurpassed master of the tenor saxophone.
