Göndöcs-garden
Century-old trees, giant oaks and plane trees welcome visitors to the Göndöcs Garden.
The Népkert opened in the summer of 1886 after the former Kis-Körös marshland was filled in, and in 1894, one of the city's most popular green spaces was given its current name.
Several significant buildings have been erected in the garden. First came the Vigadó, then the Erkel Ferenc Cultural Center—the largest cultural center in the county—and the Kohán Art Gallery. The 20th-century Heroes' Memorial, a mosaic work by György Kohán, can also be viewed. In the middle of the park stands a water tower approximately 42 meters high, topped with astronomical instruments.
The bronze bust of Benedek Göndöcs, who, among other things, conceived and named the garden, was placed in a niche on the side of the Vigadó.
